Advanced Family Mediation Skills: 4 day course
This course counts as credit toward a Certificate in Conflict Management from
Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo.

This course offers a supervised practicum. It begins with an overview of the mediation process and follows a case, from the beginning to settlement, while emphasizing the development of mediation skills and techniques. These steps include:

• Referral to mediation
• Screening for abuse
• Negotiating a retainer contract:
  • With solicitors
  • With clients
• Focusing the mediation:
  • Establishing a co-operative framework
  • Clarifying the rules of communication
  • Identifying the parties positions & interests
  • Developing a case strategy
  • Generating options
• Individual caucuses
• Interviewing children
• Involvement of:
  • New partners
  • Extended family members
  • Relevant professionals, e.g. accountants, teachers, mental health professionals
• Dealing with power imbalances and impasses
• Understanding different styles of conflict resolution
• Strategies for settlement of:
  • Parenting plans
  • Support or property division
• Terminating mediation:
  • Preparing a Memorandum of Understanding, or
  • Referral to other resources
  • Follow-up
• There will be one coach per 6 participants
