Advanced Family Mediation Skills: 4 day course
This course counts as credit toward a Certificate in Conflict Management from
Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo.
This course offers a supervised practicum. It begins with an overview of the mediation process and follows a case, from the beginning to settlement, while emphasizing the development of mediation skills and techniques. These steps include:
- Referral to mediation
- Screening for abuse

Negotiating a retainer contract:
- With solicitors
- With clients

Focusing the mediation:
- Establishing a co-operative framework
- Clarifying the rules of communication
- Identifying the parties positions & interests
- Developing a case strategy
- Generating options
- Individual caucuses
- Interviewing children

Involvement of:
- New partners
- Extended family members
- Relevant professionals, e.g. accountants, teachers, mental health professionals
- Dealing with power imbalances and impasses
- Understanding different styles of conflict resolution

Strategies for settlement of:
- Parenting plans
- Support or property division

Terminating mediation:
- Preparing a Memorandum of Understanding, or
- Referral to other resources
- Follow-up
- There will be one coach per 6 participants
