Advanced Family Mediation Skills: 4 Day Course

This program has been accredited for 5.5 Professionalism Hours. This program is also eligible for up to 17 Substantive Hours.

This course counts towards an Advanced Certificate in Conflict Management from Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo.

This course offers a supervised practicum. It begins with an overview of the mediation process and follows a case, from the beginning to settlement, while emphasizing the development of mediation skills and techniques.

This course offers a supervised practicum. It begins with an overview of the mediation process and follows a case, from the beginning to settlement, while emphasizing the development of mediation skills and techniques.

These steps include:

Referral to mediation
Screening for abuse
Negotiating a retainer contract:
- With solicitors
- With client
Focusing the mediation:
- Establishing a co-operative framework
- Clarifying the rules of communication
- Identifying the parties positions & interests
- Developing a case strategy
- Generating options
Individual caucuses
Interviewing children
Involvement of:
- New partners
- Extended family members
- Relevant professionals, e.g. accountants, teachers, mental health professionals
Dealing with power imbalances and impasses
Understanding different styles of conflict resolution
Strategies for settlement of:
- Parenting plans
- Support or property division
Terminating mediation:
- Preparing a Memorandum of Understanding, or
- Referral to other resources
- Follow-up
There will be one coach per 6 participants
